Make a backup plan before you need it

A backup is useful only if you can restore it. Decide which files, databases and configuration details are essential, then choose a backup schedule that reflects how much data you can afford to lose.
Keep a separate copy outside the server where practical, protect backup access and periodically test a restore. Check whether your specific service includes backups; if it does not, arrange and maintain your own independent copies.
